MS IE 7 beta public release

Well here it is, IE 7 public beta release. I'll be trying it out just to evaluate what is happening - but I still like FireFox....

All I really hope for is good CSS support, I have had to put a message up for IE users on my up and comming website warning them about the bad layout etc.

SNO has a website

Take a look at http://www.snotelecom.co.za/ although I cannot think what is up with the name 'SNOT' is looks like someone is at least doing something. Oh - I refuse to comment on that site design ;)

News, News and more News

Well Google now has Google News South Africa, which is exiting, but it brings me to comparing it to news.jonga.co.za.

I have chosen Google for 'most' news following symply because at the moment their system of displaying news is alot more relyable and there is more news.

But I will still be using trusty Jonga for the odd search :)

No posts for a while ... my bad

Hi all - sorry about the lack of posts for a while, I have been quite busy of late - but I will try and give some 'interesting' content up next week :) ...

Well in the mean time let me link to a joke over at MyADSL :D - see it here.

This is Henry ...

Well if anyone wanted to know if I had any pets - this is Henry. He is a very lovable dog, although he does like to take up his space ...

Anyway - I was just playing with the blog feature of Picasa and so posted this - thought it might be a nice touch ;)

Enjoy! Posted by Picasa

First 3 days of school, summary

Well I haven't had a chance to post for the past three days, so here is one for all of them ...

I was just reading a thread over at MyADSL regarding iPods, go over and take a look - my comments are there on the video which I got about a month ago.

I was browsing through sailing.org.za and came across this old picture from the news gallery. I'm not sure when it's from - but nice pic!
Just note that the pic does come from the SAS website ...

A little note on MyADSL - it seems to be 'officially' SA's biggest forum, which is nice. But still a long way from being big on a global scale - see some of the biggest here.

As part of my 'new idea' discussed earlier I am looking for a way to get php to create a seed torrents, I have looked at a few methods so far but none seem to work well (BlogTorrent looks best, it just seems not to seed most of the time ...) so ATM I am looking at TorrentFlux which does look like it is a bit too much, but I'll still look at it. If anyone has a solution please let me know!

Well it seems the situation in our favourite next door neighbor Zimbabwe's situation isn't improving - the 10 Zim provences are being asked to raise 1 Billion dollars (about R63 000) for old Bob's birthday celebrations - disgusting!

Well there are some highlights - check out Digg.com, they always have some interesting stories.

Mutterings ...

Oh well I have to go back to school tomorrow, which makes me feel very depressed :( so I thought I'd post a last post of the holidays :).

Anyway, I suppose this has to be my most pointless post so far but hey - there we go - cheers all :D

Woah - Torrents are cool on Dialup

Well considering that I was completly irritated by my computer's lack of ability to download a playable edition of Twit I decided to try downloading the file as a torrent, and I am impressed. My download is running at 1-3kb/s while certain http downloads are arround 0.8 kb/s. It is such a pitty that this brilliant way of sharing information is restricted here in South Africa, but I shall not go into rant mode right now :).

Another module ...

This one is a bit more interesting than the others - it shows the Screw the Public counter ... I could not resist :D

Get it while it's still hot at http://base.google.com/base/items?oid=1370255136048418973

And now a weather module

Well I was thinking that it is rather irritating that Google doesn't offer weather for us here in South Africa, so I made a module which loads the Weathercom weather module - I want to improve on this - rather not use Weather.com - but it is a start ...

Get it at http://base.google.com/base/items?oid=15126059317795536400 - the default display is Cape Town but you *should* be able to change it ...

Just remember - when you have computer faults ...

I have been havings some computer problems as you can read in this thread. So I was bored and started looking through the Google Personilised Homepage API - and made a really pointless and reletivly lame (depending on who you ask ...) module which helps you through those tough times with your computer ...

Get it here :D

Competition the reason for Australia’s increased broadband take-up

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have identified increased competition in the telecommunications market and the reason for the increased rate of adoption according to Australian IT. This just shows you what competition can do for people.

Search, Search everywhere

At seems that since Google arrived everyone has wanted to do search. Before that it was just considered a utility - did you know that the Google founders tried to sell their product to Yahoo for $1 Million - and that Yahoo refused?

Recently I posted information about Jonga - a new South African Search Engine which is returning some great resutlts and has some fun features. Another local option which poped up is eSearch which is not a search engine which I am taking too - even though my total searches are about 2. This is probably because of the layout - everything seems too confusing for me ... Also my search term 'Sailing' only brought up the South African Sailing website 4th, while Jonga managed it at first.

But that is all local, but moving to international Jonga is still a competitor with an international search function which seems to work fairly well and I use it sometimes if Google isn't working for me. But then their is also Wink which introduces a new way of searching. The idea being that everyone contrabutes to the search results by tagging and rating websites. Then their is also Wink Answers which is similar to Answers.com (never liked them ...) in that their is a page for each search term, but the difference being that it is a wiki.

I am still getting used to the Wink idea and features, but at the moment I feel that it is too complicated for the ordinary user. I think Jonga will go a long way, and in that space of time we will see more and more search engines poping up - the thing to wonder is if any of them will do a Google.

Notepad2

I was a bit bored this afternoon messing around waiting for 7 when I could connect to the web so I looked around on the OpenCD (I have a whole pile of them lying around ...) and discovered an app I han't thought to install before - Notepad2. Besides having more tools than Notepad and still being as fast it also has Syntax Schemes so you can edit HTML and PHP documents easily - much faster to load that than Dreamweaver if you are in a hurry ...

Anyway - very cool, very small and fast ...

Well, I'm back :D

After a great holiday with friends and family I am not back my internet connection and have discovered some cool things have happened while I have been gone
  • Intel Macs - oh I want one
  • Thunderbird 1.5 - I think I will give it try, but I will probably stick to my Gmail - I like it :)
  • Telkom still exists (surprise, surprise!)
  • Google Pack - I have seen some people saying that it is 'sloppy' but I think it looks cool enough - well as soon as I get FireFox to actually download something I'll let you know ...
  • iTunes converts videos for iPod (so I troubled for hours over nothing :()
  • Within roughly a week 20 pages at Digg.com have passed - causing me to have to read them all :)
  • There is probably going to be an update to Google Talk - see this preview
So that is all interesting, and this year? Well I have a new 'plan' which involves something big .... but for now it is still an idea - but if it happens this blog will be the first place I announce it - I Promise!

Now regarding the future of How2 - I *think* that I have decided to leave it up for a while and do nothing with it, I was thinking of just closing it down but that takes time - so I'll leave it for now. The reasons being that it has not taken off as I hoped, there is too much spam and I do not have the time. I thought that I had something better than the eHow wiki

Cheers all, I'll be gone - for a while

Cheers everyone - I'm off on holiday for a while (I can't remember how long right now :P) so if you see no blog entries it is not because I have lost interest!

Volvo Ocean Race Leg2 start

What a let down! I wan't able to go and watch the start of leg 2 of the Volvo Ocean race ... and I live in the city! :( Pity I also didn't get time to go and look at the boats, wrong time of year ;(

Anyway - followed it here - still interesting enough.

Yawn ... It's a new year

Well after finally waking up a good few hours ago I realized it was 2006, what this year will bring will be interesting - here are some developments I look forward to:
  • SNO should come into operation
  • Apple will release Intel powered computers - cheaper powerbooks?
  • How2 might see unpredicted growth .... I wish
  • The browser wars heating up
  • A brand new year, brand new opportunities - just the same people! :D
But more seriously - good luck to everyone and have a great year.
