Digg Story> Space elevator now one step closer to reality

Just saw this on Digg, to be honest it seems a bit impractical and they are a long way off ... but bellow is my comment on Digg and the actuall story text :)

Comment: How would they keep the thing straight in the air? If the end in space was not effected by gravity it could hold the cable up but one would presume that it would orbit the earth - meaning that the earth would be wraped in this huge cable :0

Digg: A slim cable for a space elevator has been built stretching a mile into the sky, enabling robots to scrabble some way up and down the line. A private US company on a quest to build a space elevator by April 2018, stretched the strong carbon ribbon 1 mile (1.6 km) into the sky from the Arizona desert .

Although now I see my thoughts prove wrong, see the other points there :D
